Poland
Has a formal national asylum procedure โ but if your route into Poland is via the Belarus border, be aware the right to claim asylum there has been actively suspended by law since March 2025, and repeatedly extended since.

Not tourist facts โ the things that actually shape daily life while your case is pending and after it's decided.
How you could qualify to enter this system
- In-land asylum application to the Office for Foreigners โ but not currently available at the Belarus border, with narrow exceptions
How the process generally works
Applicants register their claim, typically with the Border Guard, and are interviewed as part of the Office for Foreigners' review. Critical distinction: at the Belarus border specifically, Poland has suspended the right to apply for asylum entirely under a law first introduced in March 2025 and extended repeatedly since (into a seventh consecutive extension by mid-2026). A Polish regional court ruled against the legal basis for this in January 2026, but the suspension has continued in practice regardless of that ruling.

What you'll typically need
- Passport or ID if available

Support available while your case is decided
- Reception centers run by the Office for Foreigners

The Belarus border suspension has narrow exceptions: unaccompanied minors, pregnant women, people with specific health or age-related needs, people facing a real risk of serious harm if returned to Belarus, and Belarusian nationals can still apply there. Everyone else crossing from Belarus has, as a matter of stated government policy, been denied the ability to claim asylum at that specific border โ a genuinely different situation from entering Poland by any other route.
Common pitfalls
- Assuming you can claim asylum at the Belarus border as a general rule โ that right has been suspended since March 2025 and repeatedly extended (into a seventh consecutive extension by mid-2026), despite a January 2026 regional court ruling against its legal basis.
- Not knowing the narrow exceptions to that suspension โ unaccompanied minors, pregnant women, people with specific health/age needs, people who can show a real risk of serious harm in Belarus, and Belarusian nationals can still apply there.
- Missing the short appeal deadline โ as little as 7 calendar days if your case is in the accelerated procedure.
